Image of the Tripadvisor rating Hip Clean Hotel very untrained staff

The rooms at the hotel are very clean and upper floors for the Restaurant area in Pool and Bar are very very nice. However, the lobby is virtually nonexistent with very little places to sit. The staff is very friendly but really very untrained and the elevators are very confusing to use and you get very little help. Lastly, they had an event during breakfast and closed off the breakfast area and basically turned the whole thing into chaos. It's an example of the fact that the staff really is pretty poorly. Dear friends, We stayed at this "5-star" hotel in May 2025. First, it’s important to know that there is no official authority or standardized rating system for hotels in the USA. Each hotel can assign itself the number of stars it deems fit. This is precisely the case with Virgin Hotels New York City. Most rooms in this hotel do not have a private bathroom. The "bathroom" is simply a door opening to a 1-square-meter shower cubicle, and nothing else (photo 1). In Europe, this hotel wouldn’t even qualify for 4 stars, let alone 5. The sink is placed in the entryway (photo 2), across from an open, IKEA-style wardrobe for storing your belongings. There are no shelves for your shirts, sweaters, or underwear—everything must be placed under the wardrobe, which has no door (photo 3). All of this gives the entryway a dated, very low-cost charm. The room’s entrance opens directly onto the sink, where your toothbrush sits—quite a design choice… As for the room, it’s advertised as 25 square meters (King room). However, this area includes the entryway with its marvelous sink, the cramped 1-square-meter shower, and the toilet. The room itself is about 15 square meters. In one corner, there’s the "minibar." It’s a rather flimsy structure, resembling a DIY storage unit, with the room’s crown jewel at its center: a red SMEG mini fridge, which is clearly the hotel’s pride (photo 4) and likely the most valuable item in the room. The minibar offers a small bottle of vodka for $38, a small bottle of bourbon for $48, and a 50cl bottle of American wine for $30. A small bottle of water costs $7. No doubt, the fridge pays for itself quickly with these drink prices. I think hotels can be divided into two categories: those that offer a complimentary bottle of water and those that don’t. Beyond the commercial gesture, it’s a sign of attentiveness. Virgin Hotels New York City falls into the second category. Considering a small bottle of water costs less than 50 cents, you can infer that for Virgin Hotels, no profit is too small, and guest attentiveness is their last concern. You pay $400 per night for the room, but for a 50-cent bottle of water, you’re charged $7. What’s frustrating here isn’t the $7 for a bottle of water, but the clear lack of regard and attention this hotel shows its guests, a pattern confirmed by other details. An elegant water dispenser is placed in the hallway, but oops… they forgot to provide a carafe. So many little gestures to show how much they value you. Virgin Hotels offers an app called "The Know" to provide free upgrades and late check-out. Be aware that upgrades are only possible when rooms are available, but you might doubt this when the front desk tells you no rooms are available without even checking! As for the late check-out—1 PM instead of 12 PM—guaranteed when you join The Know program, that’s not possible either, even though the app proudly states: "Know Member Perk: Guaranteed late check-out (May 21st - Sep 1st)." It’s worth noting that Virgin Hotels doesn’t honor its own commitments. Regarding the reception area, there are no amenities for welcoming guests: no restrooms, no drinks, and few seats. The entrance feels more like that of a bank branch than the cozy, welcoming lobby of a 5-star hotel. In summary, this hotel is on the level of a 3-star Ibis, shows no attention to its guests, and doesn’t honor its commitments. This hotel is certainly not "Fabulous"—it’s just "Meh." Enjoy your stay in New York! Read less
