Image of the Tripadvisor rating Fascinating lesson on the Civil War!

The tour started with the assertion that the Civil War was solely due to the north overtaxing the south and that the abolition of slavery was merely a by-product. Then slavery was not mentioned again a single time all while showcasing an opulence made possible not only by nutrient rich soil but also by huge amounts of free labor! Breathtaking!… قراءة المزيد

Another reviewer mentioned that the family was kind to the slaves, i.e., the human beings that they OWNED. Read less

Beautiful house and grounds but I found the guided visit a bit rushed. There was only the 2 of us on the visit and we were in and out in about 20 mins. It felt quite rushed and you don't see much of the house. I felt for the same price you saw more at Oak Valley Plantation with a more in depth visit. Food at the restaurant was very good, staff… Read more

It felt quite rushed and you don't see much of the house. I felt for the same price you saw more at Oak Valley Plantation with a more in depth visit. Food at the restaurant was very good, staff lovely. We stayed at the Plantation overnight which was lovely, beautiful room all perfect, however when you pay us$250 for 1 night I would have expected not to have to pay an extra us$35 pp to visit the house. Overall lovely place to see and stay but very expensive. Read less

Our guide Jennifer was AMAZING!! I was visiting the area from Upstate New York and was taken her by locals. We visited 3 different plantations while I was in town. Although all the plantations were beautiful and amazing in there own way, having Jennifer as our guide made it the best experience by far. She had such a great personality and tremendous knowledge. We ran into her a couple times after our tour, while exploring the grounds. She helped us with where to go for lunch and answered any other question we had. I am gluten free and I will say the Chicken Ceasar Salad was so delicious at The Carriage House. It is very easy to see and feel how much Jennifer enjoys her work! Read less

We stayed the night at Houmas House in a cottage, and were able to get the first tour the next morning. It was expertly guided by Susanna and we were able to ask as many questions as we liked. The tour was almost an hour-long. The furnishings of the house are 40% original and the rest are quite unique and are of the period. The owner has taken meticulous care in arranging all the rooms. I liked it that we could take pictures inside the house. The night we stayed at the inn, we ate dinner at the restaurant which I would recommend. Afterwards, walking back to our cottage, we strolled through the lighted gardens complete with many water fountains. Read less
