The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

Very expensive but lovely hotel. One elevator in main building. We stayed in the cabana section #4247. Very nice, roomy, facing hot tub and pool. Refrigerator and coffee maker. June gloom prevented any quality ocean view for our three days. Will try to avoid gloom in future. Temperature never got above 70. Saw numerous dogs. Service top… Read more

Not worth the cost. Wasn’t given the room I reserved, was told they would eventually give me room I reserved but never heard back from them. Room was a connecting room so could hear everything in the next room. Shower heads and steam iron in the room have never been cleaned. Asked for no housekeeping while I was there. Housekeeping came first day, asked again to have no housekeeping and then next day someone came into the room while I was showering. There was no ‘do not disturb’ sign in the room and I asked for that to be delivered but it never was. There are much better hotels in Coronado with better service for a better price. Read less

The renovated Victorian rooms are extraordinary. The bathrooms and furnishing are top-notch. The public areas are in perfect condition, and it's a joy to imagine what it was like here 100 years ago. There is room for improvement. The hotel emphasizes doing everything on your Hilton APP. However, when you don't provide any written documentation in the rooms, the data on the app must be correct. While they upgraded the rooms, they didn't update the room numbers on the floor plan in the app. They still show the old room numbers and nonexistent restaurants. You can't access the 3 main restaurants without going outside, down to the beach. We wandered around the first floor looking for the entrances or signs, but there weren't any signs other than for Babcock and Story. There are a few signs that mention restaurants and point toward the beach, but as you leave the North elevator, you won't find a useful sign. The sign pointing to the restaurants is located inside the courtyard - it's not visible from the elevator. The sign on the first floor, where the stairs lead down to the shops, should have a sign that says "Restaurants" and point downward. It only mentions Babcock and Story. When I asked the front desk if there was a property map in the room, they said no, but they mentioned that a paper map should have been provided when I checked in, assuming I checked in in person. We checked in online and went straight to our room. Not sure how you are supposed to know about these paper maps when you check in online. The paper map we received didn't show enough detail to be particularly useful. It doesn't show the layout of the hallways, elevators, and stairs. It's difficult to try to figure out the best way to get down to the first-floor restaurants. The room numbers use the building number for the first digit. We assumed the first digit was the floor number. I don't know how they expect the guest to learn that they use a room numbering system that may be great for the IT people, but when your room number is 32086, you assume that the first digit is the floor. After you arrive on the third floor, looking for room 32056 (remember that there is no in-person check-in), you realize your mistake and head back down to the second floor. I was surprised that a luxury hotel with three major restaurants doesn't offer in-room dining. It's also weird that the room phone has a speed dial button for room service that doesn't exist. The app says breakfast is at Serea - but it's actually at the Veranda. Your only other option for breakfast is the on-site convenience store, "Eno Market," which sells premade breakfast sandwiches. They have a self-checkout kiosk in the market, but after 3 attempts, the machine refused to process our order, and we had to join the long line. The helpful clerk told us that the self-checkout machine never works. If this is accurate, an out-of-order sign would be beneficial. You can't check your account statement online or on the room TV. If you call or text the front desk, they will send you a copy. Once we figured out the hotel's floor plan and learned the best way to navigate it, everything improved. Read less
