The hotel

Mexico, but make it next-level. UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya isn’t just a hotel - it’s an adults-only resort where luxury is served with a twist of lime and a wink. This is Riviera Maya reimagined: a place where your poolside margarita comes with sea views, your room comes with a personalised mini-bar, and your biggest decision of the day is beach or spa (spoiler: do both). Set on the powder-soft sands of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, UNICO 20°87° takes the whole ‘treat yourself’ thing and runs with it. Think locally-inspired cuisine across five top-tier restaurants – tacos at lunch, sushi or perfectly grilled steaks at dinner? Sí, por favor – plus handcrafted cocktails at every turn and a full-service spa where even the massages are influenced by the region. This isn’t just a getaway. It’s a full-on, five-star upgrade to your reality.

We have been to Unico 3 times now and love it more each time. We had the pleasure of having the two best butlers around, Eduardo and Carlos. They made our stay 100/10. They were so attentive and ready to help with anything we needed. We had a group of 5 couples and they helped every single one of us throughout our stay in one way or another. Never… Read more

The drinks were great as well I really liked how they had special cocktails and not just the typical all inclusive drinks. We will definitely be back! The beach had a lot of seaweed but that is because of the time of the year, it was still beautiful and we mostly hung out by the pool which had great servers! Read less

I’ve debated on whether to write a review because it’s going to have some negative stuff. I hate to be Debbie the Downer when everybody else raves about Unico. This hotel is absolutely beautiful, and the service is as good as everyone says it is. But there are some issues, one being the food, which is supposedly stellar. It’s definitely hit or miss. My husband and I arrived in the evening and had a fair dinner at the Mexican restaurant. The next morning, we went to the breakfast buffet, and most of the food in steamer trays that was supposed to be hot was not even warm. We did have some excellent food, but we had some inedible food. At the Italian restaurant, we had a yummy appetizer of whipped ricotta and goat cheese. We each ordered an arugula and pear salad with Gorgonzola dressing. If there was any arugula in the salad, we did not find it. It was basically mixed greens, and the pears were not ripe. The dressing tasted like Kraft in a bottle. My entrée was gnocchi with salmon. The gnocchi was rubbery and the sauce had the texture and taste of flour, salt and water. The salmon appeared to be leftover flecks. I took one bite and moved the dish towards my husband for him to taste it. He agreed it was inedible. A manager came by to ask if I wanted something else, but after the salad and the gnocchi, we were simply ready to go. We skipped dessert. This was actually the night of my birthday, so my birthday dinner was a total letdown. Everybody also raves about their butlers. We got a text message from ours every day with a snapshot of the resort activities, most of which were fitting for a kindergartener. We were never offered help for reserving a seat at the pool. but after experiencing the poolswe would not have done repeat visits due to noise and crowds. The majority of the clientele is American, some of whom are rude to the waiters for sport. Others are extremely loud and attention getting, wearing as little as possible to show off their multitude of tattoos, for example, or making sure everybody knows what experienced travelers they are eating their outdoor voices.I found myself embarrassed by other people‘s behavior. Like the food, the drinks throughout the resort were hit or miss. Some were incredible, like the fresh watermelon margarita at the lunch buffet. We ordered a watermelon margarita elsewhere and got some kind of sweet melon flavored bottled mix that was not drinkable. We also got hit up at the check-in and in two additional phone calls to the room about the (drum roll) legendary club. I had googled how to say “I’m not interested” in Spanish. I just repeated that every time someone asked us about it. I used the spa credit for a mani and pedi, which is really the only way to use it without spending a bunch of your own money. I loved the technician and tipped her well. It’s a beautiful atmosphere, but the equipment is rustic, which kind of lends to its charm. Last, but not least, the sargassum. Although other reviewers warned about it, it was shockingly bad. They still had chairs and umbrellas and drink service at the beach. And because the pools are so crowded and loud, even the so-called quiet pool, we spent most of our time at the beach. There are very few people down there, which would be a dream come true if you could use the water. Every day there was someone in a tractor and a mower going back-and-forth on the beach, trying to reduce the sargassum. I didn’t notice a smell from the seaweed, but the smell from the tractor was bad. The process also seemed ineffective. It looked like they were just mowing the sargassum up and dumping it back down. We had excellent drink service in the main bar. They had live music for one hour a couple of nights, and one of these couples was exceptional. The other another was pretty good. They were both entertaining, though. We had a pot of coffee delivered every day by room service, and they were prompt and efficient. We ordered breakfast by room service one day and found it to be lackluster. They also brought separate plates for every item we ordered so it was a ridiculous amount of dishes. Overall, we had a relaxing time despite some issues. housekeeping is excellent and the room smells yummy. But this is a resort we would never recommend or return to. Read less

Our stay at UNICO Riviera Maya was peaceful, relaxing, and marked by excellent service. The resort is well designed, with peaceful pools, elegant architecture, and thoughtful details throughout. Eduardo and Carlos, our butlers, were simply amazing. Their attention to detail, professionalism, and genuine care enhanced every part of our stay. They are what makes the Hall of Fame what it is! They ARE Hall of Fame. We’d also like to recognize Victor Hugo at Restaurant 20٫87, who provided excellent service during our lunch, and Jackeline at Café Inez, who greeted us daily and already knew what we wanted as soon as we went inside. We also appreciated the fun poolside activities and the talented live music performers at night. The reason this is not a 5-star review is due to an unresolved matter with Legendary Vacation Club on our final day. We are still awaiting a formal response. Until this incident, we had been pleased with previous dealings with the club. Even so, the resort itself and the team made our stay truly memorable. We hope to return under better circumstances. Great stay. Amazing food, great service! Having butlers as good as Javier and Roger makes all the difference! Dinner reservations, setting up pool chairs at the pool of our choice. The restaurant choices were awesome for every meal. Would recommend Unico every time!
