The hotel

Having recently been the proud recipient of a ‘Best Renovations’ award, the Intercontinental Montréal offers luxury accommodation in one of the city’s most sought after locations. Combining the exclusivity of a boutique hotel with top-tier service, guests are most certainly in for a treat when staying here, relaxing in rooms that are sumptuously furnished with plenty of space to stretch out in. On the 10th floor is the fitness centre with state-of-the-art equipment and aerobic classes. Alternatively, head to the indoor pool to swim a few laps or chill out in the spa tub. Osco! means ‘bravo!’, a sentiment you’ll heartily agree with at the Intercontinental’s signature restaurant, a Province-inspired brasserie with an ever-changing menu. There’s also the Sarah B Bar, named after Sarah Bernhardt, the queen of the French Tragedy, whose spirit is said to wander the vaults of the hotel — so keep your eyes peeled! At ‘green hour’, Absinthe is served. Known as the ‘green fairy’ it was said to enhance the creative energies of the great 19th century European writers and artists, including Sarah Bernhardt, but beware, at 55–75% proof, it’s not a tipple for the faint hearted!

The Intercontinental Montréal was home for 3 nights while on a recent trip to Canada and impressed with the hotel and it’s central location. It’s easily accessible from Gare Centrale de Montréal which is less than 10 minutes away if walking. Checkin was quick and soon in my room which was on the 14th floor facing the rear of the hotel so it was pretty quiet and no noise at all which was great. The room was a good size, very spacious, the king bed very comfortable with white crisp linens , I slept very well. I agree with previous comments that it feels a tad dated but it is holding up well apart from the odd scuff mark here and there. There was a desk should you need to work, a large screen TV, fridge and coffee machine, everything you could want in a hotel. The wifi was fast and easy to connect to . 2 bottles of complimentary waters which were replaced every day was a nice touch. The bathroom was a decent size with a separate shower and tub. The towels were soft and luxurious and the toiletries of a high standard and smelt lovely. There was 2 separate wardrobes so plenty of space to hang your clothes ( lots of hangers too ) Breakfast was not included in my rate and was $35 p.p. which I thought was very reasonable for a fancy hotel. The hotel bar, Sarah B has oysters on a Wednesday and Thursday at a great price - $9 for 6 / $16 for 12 . There was also selected cocktails for $10 which were well made too ! All of the staff which I encountered were great , happy to speak English or French and helpful with anything which you might have needed. The location is in an excellent location, you can walk to the metro, the old city / port and numerous nearby sights, bars and restaurants. I would not hesitate to stay here again when next in the city. Read less

Stay included family (with kids) in a one-bedroom suite. Accompanied spouse on a business trip. Excellent location- walking distance to old port and options for family entertainment. Didn’t want to drive anywhere and didn’t need to for the most part. Pool - picked this hotel for the saltwater pool but only went once. Not ideal for young children because pool depth is 4’ 6” throughout (same depth) and no stairs to enter. The pool has inserts for food placement to ascend/descend but no stairs to lounge or assist children with entry. They have life vests for children and pool noodles, floats available. Dry sauna inside change rooms. Clean facility. Gym is decent with great selection of workout equipment. Valet service was attentive and there was always someone at the entrance. Restaurant- French restaurant is excellent. Service was attentive and made the dining experience comfortable. Waiter provided good options and kids said it was one of their best meals in Montreal. Ordered room service from Oslo a couple of nights. Other dining options included Java (coffee/smoothies) and the attached ground level indoor mall type food options for bagels and coffee. Old Port/local destinations within walking distance: - museum of illusions was very close and a must if you have a teenager. It was a highlight and we spent more than an hour exploring. - if you want a traditional America style breakfast try Alo coco (6 minutes away). - Rue MCGill offers many quick dining options including fish n chips, burgers, ramen, etc. - recommend Aura experience at Notre Dame Basilica…old port is within 10 to 15 minutes away walking distance. - Montreal science centre is an option but I found more interesting for younger kids. Go during the afternoon because a lot of local school children do field trips earlier in the day, which makes it busier but it clears out after 2 pm. - escape room (amaze) is located close by in old port (6 minutes walking distance) - lots of cafes and crepe places…next time will try high tea - hot yoga studio, oxygen yoga located 4 minutes walking distance away…highly recommended and very welcoming atmosphere. Ask for a promo membership option to try a few classes. Read less

Stayed here for the Montreal Jazz festival. My flight was a bit delayed and I had tickets for an 8 o'clock show. I arrived at the hotel around 5 so I figured that wasn't too bad. However, upon arriving to the lobby for the check in the line was very long with only one person working steady, and another person who just seemed to go in back of the counter and help a person and then disappear and come back 15 minutes later. I finally get checked in 45 minutes later and went up to my room. The room, as others have said, is really out dated and could use a modern makeover. However, it was clean and I really did not have any issues with it. When I was in the room I decided to check my debit card to see what the exchange rate was between the USD and CAD. This is when I realized the lady at the desk double charged my room AND the room deposit. So, I had to return to the desk and a half hour later finally was able to explain the situation. After she went in the office for about 15 or minutes she comes out and tells me that the system will automatically take it off and just to wait. Needless to say, when I checked the next morning the charges were still there, and I could not get any help from any one at the front desk since it was now Sunday. Luckily I called my bank and they thankfully removed the charges. Of course two days later the hotel charged me again. And again, I had to call my bank to have them remove the charges. I once again told the desk to stop charging me, asked to speak to a manager-not available and was given someone's card, whom at that time did not bother to contact. After my stay was over, and I arrived home, I checked my card to make sure I wasn't billed twice. Then I noticed I wasn't billed at all. Two days later the charge for the room was applied and there were no further problems. Service was horrible at this hotel. The front desk was understaffed during a peak check in time. With proper staffing mistakes like these can be avoided. Further, no one at the hotel (besides myself) seemed to give a crap about the issue as I had interactions with three people. The hotel itself is just ok. It has easy access to the metro and is close to many attractions. But definitely not worth the price you pay for the room and service. Many better options available. Would not recommend. Read less

We stayed here for 4 nights over the Christmas holiday. We chose this hotel for its location. Although the location was very convenient to things we wanted to see, the hotel itself was very disappointing. This Intercontinental is old, tired, and in desperate need of a remodel. We had a king bed standard room. The room was a decent size but full of worn out, mismatched furniture. The bathroom had a tub and tiny, moldy, corner unit shower stall, so tiny my husband couldn’t even bend over to wash his feet. Fixtures in the bathroom were so old that the chrome finish was worn off some of the pieces. The sink drain was incredibly slow. We arrived the afternoon of Christmas Eve after a long travel day. We had booked a dinner reservation at the hotel restaurant, Osco as we knew we would be tired and dining in the hotel would be convenient. The fixed menu meal that was the only option for dinner, was uninspiring. Everything tasted like it had been prepared far in advance and just reheated before serving. The common areas in the hotel just looked dated and worn. I wouldn’t choose this hotel again. I expect more from the Intercontinental brand. Read less
