Black Rhino Game Lodge

Sun City, North West Province

Star rating

The hotel

It may feel a million miles from anywhere, sitting at the foot of an old volcanic crater and hidden among Tamboti trees, but this Pilanesberg National Park pad is actually just a few hours’ drive from Jo’burg and 33km from the fun of Sun City. Its location makes it the ideal lodge for families, first-time safari seekers, and those wanting to mix game drives with Sun City’s attractions. Its handy setting doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the safari experience though, with this malaria-free game reserve home to the famous Big Five and other photo album-favourites, and Black Rhino Game Lodge overlooking a popular wildlife-attracting waterhole.

Awesome, and then more awesome! Two safaris, one afternoon, the other at dawn both with Eric, who was superb and has eyesight better than a Golden Eagle! Saw everything, including giraffe, elephant, zebra, warthog, hippo, rhino, lion to list but a few but best of all - leopard! The fact that the lodges were superb and the food - the ostrich… Read more

Saw everything, including giraffe, elephant, zebra, warthog, hippo, rhino, lion to list but a few but best of all - leopard! The fact that the lodges were superb and the food - the ostrich fillet was cooked to perfection - added to the most perfect two days that I have experienced all most ever - and I have seen a few! I cannot rate this place too highly for the game, wardens, food and overall service, if you have the opportunity - GO Read less

Our guide, Jurgens Loedolff “Dolfie”, was a wealth of knowledge, making our trip fabulous!! He exceeded all expectations, and was a joy to have as our guide. Our family visited in February 2025, and were so pleased with their experience, they highly recommended Black Rhino and absolutely suggested to request Dolfie as our guide. We were not disappointed!! Our accommodation was immaculate, and the entire staff were so caring and attentive. This made our stay so very enjoyable. The ONLY disappointment with Black Rhino - no disclosure that drinks, with the exception of bottled water in our room, were an extra charge. This included water, espresso coffees, and alcohol at leisure, meals and on game drives. Read less

Black Rhino Game Lodge should change its name. Having the term “Game” has a different connotation as it implies a game park for hunters. It should be rightly called Wildlife Park. It is next to Pilanesberg National park and has all the Big 5, the leopard remained elusive to us. The lodge is spread out a bit and provides different types of accommodation. We had chosen to stay in a Suite but I must admit, our suite didn’t look like the suite on their website. It was spacious and comfortable but it seems strange that neither the toilet nor the shower cubicle had a door, although both were indoors. We didn’t like this as the shower sprayed everywhere and toilet had no privacy. We were able to see many animals during our 4 drives, especially the big 4, we missed out on leopard. Our guide/driver was excellent and unlike many safari places he spent longer time driving looking for wildlife than most other lodges. After a morning drive you have a cooked breakfast and then an afternoon high tea before the evening drive. The dinner and breakfast are outdoors on a patio. The menu is a-la-carte in the evening. There are lots of monkeys around who have worked out how to open the door to the dining area. Overall a satisfying stay. Read less
