The hotel

Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House. It’s a landmark in its own right though, welcoming guests for more than 90 years and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its supersized and super-opulent marble lobby would befit any visiting statesman. Its dining venue would suit dignitaries too – EDGAR Bar & Kitchen is all edgy masculine styling, high-end drinks and cocktails, and American brasserie favourites with an upscale twist. Luckily, its fitness centre is open 24/7 to work off all the treats and tipples – although, you’re better off getting out and exploring all the landmarks, museums, and galleries within a stroll of your doorstep, from Smithsonian museums to world-class shopping magnets, or hopping on the subway just around the corner.

My stay at The Mayflower fit the bill for what I needed for this visit to Washington. I came to DC to pay my respects to President Carter at his lying in state, so I wanted a comfortable hotel that was well located with a more business like atmosphere rather than a hotel that would attract tourists and families. The Mayflower fulfilled all of these requirements. The staff I encountered were all polished and professional and it was a nice surprise to be upgraded to a larger, king size room. The room itself was fine and probably on the edge of needing some updating but it was roomy and the bed was very comfortable. I think the hotel would be smart to refurbish the elevator interiors (sand down and restain that wood) and maybe redo the brass doors in the lobby. I felt like these contributed to the hotel feeling dated. A lot in the lobby seemed to be exactly the same as when I stayed here with my parents in 1984! Hallways upstairs looked nice & renovated. I felt like nighttime security was lax however and there was no barrier to anyone walking in & taking an elevator upstairs. Security should be tighter at night. The attached restaurant was very average (especially breakfast) but the staff was nice. Overall good stay! Read less

The location was very convenient for Metro and walking. There are many good dining options nearby. The room was clean and spacious with good amenities. The bed was very comfortable. The walk from the elevator to the hotel was very long. It is a beautiful hotel.

Roberto in The Edgar made FABULOUS and MEMORABLE chocolate martini. I was having a difficult day and Roberto's concoction and service allowed me to reset my day. Thank you Roberto! Kudos to manager Katie for her professionalism, friendliness and understanding. Katie provided the level of service reminiscent of the Marriott of former glory when a smile and approachability solved 90% of questions before they became problems. I earned my Titanium Lifetime the old fashioned way, by staying at Marriott facilities. Katie should be in the Marriott executive training department. Thank you Katie! Also, the lady in the 'store' (morning of 12/30) was very helpful in helping my husband select items. I don't recall her name but she was lovely. You cannot beat the location of this hotel. The historic glory adds to the wonder of DC. Read less

Our room was large but that’s about it. The room was dated, the pillows were not great, no bottles of water in the room and an ugly shower curtain. Breakfast was good and the gym had lots of equipment. I won’t be returning to this property on my next visit to DC.
