Named after General Francis Marion, the ‘Swamp Fox’ of the American Revolution, this hotel is one of the oldest and grandest in the Carolinas. Built in 1924 and sympathetically refurbished in 1996 to award-winning standards, it is packed to the rafters with Old World charm and modern comforts. The only high-rise hotel in the historic district, the views are spectacular from the top floors and the rooms are extremely well-equipped with a great range of home-from-home amenities. To keep you trim, there’s a fitness centre or head to Spa Adagio* for a well deserved spot of pampering. Classic Southern cuisine is on offer at the Swamp Fox Restaurant where the resident chef expertly showcases Charleston’s locally supplied produce. The menu changes monthly but regular favourites include Shrimp and Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes and Steamed Clams. Afterwards, relax in the cosy adjoining bar and if its the weekend you can enjoy some atmospheric live jazz music.

The staff are courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. The modern features of this vintage hotel make it a go-to for your stay. I was there for a conference of 200+ people, and the accommodations were comfortable and transparent. We will be back!

During Restaurant Week, we went to the Swamp Fox for lunch. Usually, you get mediocre food and sometimes not even the usual fare. We were welcomed and attended to by a fantastic, friendly, efficient waitress. And, the food was fantastic. We ordered the 2/$20 and were surprised at the portions and how tasty everything was. First, we had delicious, warm bread, which was a surprise itself seeing that we don't usually get bread any longer in Charleston restaurants. And bread during restaurant week? Wow. Two of us ordered the Brussel sprouts, which were fantastic and plentiful. One ordered She-Crab soup and said that it was on the of the best he'd had. Our last friend ordered the fried green tomatoes, which were wonderful. We were so full that we couldn't even finish our meals of fried snapper and French dip. From start to finish, I would highly recommend the Swamp Fox for service, food and atmosphere. We may go back for supper and get the short ribs! Read less

The reason I am writing this review is because of the front dest customer service representative. Overall I was satisfied with my hotel experience, but was blown away by how friendly, helpful, and accommodating Micaela - the women at the front desk was. From the moment I approached, her smile and eye contact said - I am hear to help you! When I stated, " I know I am rather early, but do you have any availability for an early check-in?" Micaela jumped to action! She used my first name ( after obtaining my Drivers License and asking to do so) the entire time. Her smile was amazing and contagious! ! As I was walking away from the front desk I felt like a VIP! And over the next 3 days of my visit there every time I passed the front desk I witness Micaela doing the same with each guest! Keep it up Micaela! Read less
