Queen Kapiolani Hotel

Honolulu, Oahu

Virgin rating

The hotel

Named after the beloved wife of Hawaii’s last king, Queen Kapiolani is something of a Waikiki landmark, paying homage to Hawaii’s majestic heritage and unique culture with a modern twist. Overlooking the sandiest stretch of Waikiki Beach, guests can enjoy stunning views of Diamond Head from the balconies of their newly renovated rooms, each and every one of them furnished in breezy Island style. As a change from the beach, laze beside the pool instead, dipping in every now and again to cool off. Although there are restaurants all around you, the hotel’s own Kulana is highly recommended, not just for buffet favourites but for its sweeping panoramic views! Pre-dinner, chill awhile at the Deck Pool, sipping on your favourite cocktail – a Mai Tai perhaps?

This hotel was remodeled in 2018 so it really shows in how modern they try to make it. Despite the rooms being on the smaller side, and the hotel being shorter than other hotels, and with its long side facing Diamond head, so only a few rooms could even have a beach view. There's complimentary Hawaii Sun canned drinks upon check in. (They used to give out leis from what I heard.) The elevators all have card key security (swipe to unlock the elevator). Located literally across the street from the zoo, it is valet parking only! (But the valet damaged our luggage, and they only compensated us with food credit.) The major pluses are the water filtration system machine in the lobby and gym, two complimentary BPA-free water bottles in room, and a water boiler / heater . The wall chargers have USB-A ports for charging. There is one public microwave on the second floor, where the gym is. The gym is 24/7 and modern. There is a restaurant called Deck. (sic) that faces Diamond Head, and has decent views of sunset. The toiletries include a small bottle of mineral / reef safe sunscreen. There are no hotel slippers provided. There are many works of art throughout the hotel dedicated to "old" Hawaii including replicas of Duke Kahanamoku's surfboard, pictures of the old Queen and her family, which the hotel is named after. Pictures of other Hawaiian royalty and former owners of the hotel. Signs describing fascinating parts of Hawaii past like Maston family. The pool is a bit on the small side, and shares its space with aforementioned restaurant, Deck. There's many other included activities with the hotel such as free lei class, yoga class, surfing demonstrations, and a run club. At the valet, you can pick up beach towels (strangely, they don't seem to track them like other hotels), and beach chairs. The beach chairs have two pockets, one insulated and one not to store stuff and a backpack strap for easy carrying. The room has a rain umbrella There is an ABC store around the corner toward the Zoo and the tour bus pick up spot. Read less

We have recently returned from 8 nights in a Diamond Head view room with two Queen beds as a family of 4 (two adults and two children, aged 4 & 6). The room was tastefully decorated and was clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable and the view of Diamond Head was great. The lanais were not very inviting and were a bit disappointing. The air con unit for your room is on the lanai and blows warm air at you and is quite noisy. I would definitely recommend paying a bit extra to avoid a “studio” room which seem to be the subject of negative reviews. For the price we paid for our room compared to other hotels in Waikiki, overall we were satisfied with our room and the hotel. The common areas were very nice (a very funky “retro” cool Hawaiian style) and the pool area has recently been refurbished and is a nice place to relax and enjoy the view of Diamond Head. We had a few nice meals at the on-site restaurant, Deck. The location of the hotel is very convenient and good for families, being at the quieter end of the “strip” and right opposite the Zoo. The hotel provided complementary water bottles to refill at the water station in the lobby which was appreciated. Unfortunately there was no tea, coffee, cups or tea spoons provided for hot drinks (but there was a jug in the room). We enjoyed the lei making session in the lobby. It was something different and fun. We would probably stay somewhere else next time, but overall enjoyed our stay. Read less
