Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Honolulu, Oahu

Virgin rating

The hotel

Take in the rich heritage and stately décor of ‘The First Lady of Waikiki’. Something of a legendary resort, it cleverly combines turn-of the-century Victorian elegance with modern luxuries. Relax by the pool area, under the shade of the historic banyan tree, or on the resorts private section of beach. Fancy a bit of pampering? Treat yourself to an amazing experience at the Moanalani Spa, the only oceanfront Spa in Waikiki, where the menu features relaxing treatments inspired by traditional Hawaiian healing techniques. Dining is a treat here — from the oceanfront setting of Beachhouse at the Moana to the delightful island tradition of afternoon tea at the Veranda at the Beachhouse. For a pre-dinner glass of wine or artisan beer, head to Vintage 1901 overlooking the banyan tree, or enjoy a tropical drink with live entertainment at The Beach Bar.

The Veranda Restaurant at the Moana Surfrider has an amazing Classic Plantation Style High Tea Service and Menu. You may upgrade your meal and beverage service. Everything is thoroughly explained by our server Daniel. Also, the restaurants manager Ms. Kala is friendly, kind and proficient at her position. The cuisine is executed perfectly! Cheers!

Sadly, our stay at Moana Surfrider was quite disappointing this year. We had been informed about the balcony access being restricted, but we didn't expect the very loud construction noise with many hours each day, of grinding and jackhammering. It made the experience around the pool not relaxing at all. Unfortunately, we had to plan our days around ‘leaving’ the property to enjoy the peace and quiet we had been hoping to enjoy by staying ‘put’, at the hotel. Our last stay at this hotel was in 2011, and sadly won’t be coming back anytime soon, at least until the renovations are complete. We understand that renovations and upgrades need to be done from time to time, but having waited all year and been looking forward to our holiday for 12 months, the moment we stepped onto the property we’d wondered ‘what had we done?’ To make matters worse, we then had to plan to leave the property not only for some peace and quiet, but we also then had to leave for several other reasons. During our stay, we lost water supply for one whole day, lost electricity for most of another night and day, and had builders and painters bringing all their equipment and trolleys onto the foyer of our floor. Considering that we were paying USD $4500 for 6 nights, we found the overall experience to be very unsatisfactory. The staff at the hotel were the standout, Shaun from the tours desk did a brilliant job in organising our parasailing and rockahula show. I understand that your clients would be unhappy if some rooms had balcony access and others didn't, but it was clear that our balcony had already been renovated but we were still denied access, we could see the beautiful view of Diamond Head but could not use our balcony. Unfortunately, no balcony access, no power, no water and way too much noise, led to a very disappointing stay this time. Read less

Not up to the standards or the rate of a hotel in this class. My first room wouldn't have been acceptable at a Courtyard Marriott. I did get moved after 2 days and the 2nd room was much better. Not up to the standards or the rate of a hotel in this class. My first room wouldn't have been acceptable at a Courtyard Marriott. I did get moved after 2 days and the 2nd room was much better. Along with my room issue the water was off from 9am-3pm on one day for maintenance, the power went out in the entire hotel on my last day, when I woke up no lights etc, I believe it was off until early afternoon that day. Shower in the dark. (it had gone on and off briefly twice the night before) One elevator was down the whole stay but not a major issue. In both of my rooms the balconies were closed due to needing some kind of inspection I believe the sticker said. Other parts of the hotel look great but many look tired. The one night I ate dinner on the property it was very good, the one Continental Breakfast wasn't. Staff was decent but not particularly warm. I did have a great interaction with Paige who got me moved and a $200 credit. In retrospect that wasn't adequate compensation. Brandon who was our waiter for dinner was great as well, both 10's. All in all you can't be the historic beauty of the main building and it's location on the beach and in Waikiki, but sadly it's in major need of a renovation. I guess some of that is in progress at this time, in the meantime they need to step it up and no way the initial room I was in should ever be rented in it's condition. It was obvious the carpet for 3' -4' around the AC had been wet for quite a while, wallpaper coming apart at the seams, there was what appeared to be mold on the ceiling, lamp was a mess, smelled musty. Take a look at the photos, enough said. (FYI - I did fill out the hotel survey and let them know my experience, I got back what appeared to be a form letter with no signature, I expected something a little more personal) Read less

They had fireworks one of the evenings but it was a bit distant from the Westin, so we had to walk towards that area of the beach. Overall I would highly recommend the Westin if staying in Waikiki. This hotel was a really nice place to go if you want to have fun or relax. I really enjoyed my stay. It reminded me of a mansion! It was huge! This hotel was so beautiful too! This hotel is so Hawaiian! I love this hotel! You could even login to Netflix on the TV!
