The hotel

Tenaya Lodge’s setting takes some beating — bordering the Sierra National Forest and set on 75 stunning acres, it’s surrounded by nature. The hotel has plenty of activities, including a choice of trails and a guided walk to a hidden waterfall. Grab your hiking boots, or maybe a mountain bike, and head out to explore. At the end of the day, take a dip in the outdoor pool, get a s’mores kit and sit around the outdoor fire pits, or grab your torch and head out on a night hike. We stayed three nights in an explorer cabin. There were six of us: grandparents, parents and kids. It was a little snug with the kids sleeping on the sofa bed, but still a great space to stay together. The cabins are pretty new and in excellent condition. We enjoyed wine, s’mores and games at the clubhouse, which was a short walk from our cabin. The shuttle service carted us around between our cabin, the main lodge and the pizza place. We found the staff to be super friendly and helpful. The kids loved the indoor pool and game room (though I think it could use an update). We would definitely come back and recommend it to others. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. It was an enjoyable trip. Even though I worked through our stay in one of the conference rooms, the lodge was beautifully decorated, even though there was no snow. It felt very wintry and made me want to bring my family back for a visit.

It was a disappointing experience. I was looking forward to a family vacation but the many issues had us wanting to leave early. The resort is run down. Lodge rooms have little storage or space for clothes, there are popcorn ceilings and the furniture is dated. The air conditioning didn’t work, was loud and our room smelled. There isn’t regular cleaning of the rooms or main areas. Most public spaces are left dirty or unattended. When we asked for help with planning a tour to Yosemite, we were met with a grumpy person who handed us a brochure to arrange ourselves. The kids game rooms have broken games, unleveled ping pong table with no net, ice skating is difficult because the ice isn’t taken care of so it is choppy. But on our second night at 10pm, there was a fire alarm and we woke up our children to leave our room and were told contradictory information of when we could re- enter our room. It made me nervous that communication between staff is not streamlined for safety issues. Tenaya has potential but the lack of care, cleanliness and lack of communication for safety issues has our family not willing to come back. Read less

Tenaya Lodge is a beautiful mountain resort with a huge potential to offer you a dream getaway. We spent our Thanksgiving weekend there with our friends. Our room was clean and spacious. Bed was comfortable. The resort offers an indoor pool, gaming room, a spa and beautiful hiking trails nearby. Our first impressions were quite positive when we arrived. However, we left the resort quite disappointed due to poor customer service and lack of hospitality we received. We had the most unfortunate experience at Jackalope's Bar & grill - the only restaurant option in the main lodge. We went there to grab drinks after dinner and enjoy our time together as a group. The staff is very strict about seating and after buying drinks you are not allowed to take any of the available tables nearby. The staff was unaccommodating and they were simply rude. Restaurant supervisor and even hotel (night shift) manager have no idea how to handle these situations and comfort customers when conflicts like this happen. If you care about hospitality and quality of service in your stays, don't waste your money here. It's best to consider alternatives to enjoy the beautiful nature with piece of mind. Read less
