Hotel Del Coronado

The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

We have been to San Diego numerous times and stayed at the Marriott on Coronado and wanted to try the Del for the history, location (walkable to main part of town and beach) and to splurge. We knew going into our 2 night weekend stay it would be pricey and that the hotel had some renovations going on. Stayed in the Views which we loved for being updated (farther from the main hotel renovations) and having quick access to the beach to walk our dog. Our room over looked resort area which was ok we weren’t in it that much so didn’t care about the ocean view when you can just walk outside. While our 2 queen beds room generally looked nice being updated, the shower leaked everywhere due to poor construction (they need a seal at the base of the shower door to prevent water splashing out when using). The shower head also looked like it was getting rusty. The beds were the worst part and biggest complaint, uncomfortable felt like an old cheap mattress; expect a sore/stiff back. For the price you’re paying I expect a comfortable bed not to mention knowing basic construction of having a seal at the base of the glass shower door to prevent so much water getting out on the floor creating a mess and slipping hazard. We didn’t dine at any on property restaurants and instead walked into town which was the main plus to staying here. Generally staff were great all around during our stay, though we booked massages at the spa with the concierge and he messed up our gender preference for masseuse. The spa and massage were lovely though pricy (you also don’t need to be a guest to use). It was lovely being able to use the amenities there though the day of our treatment (you have in and out access to sauna, spa, pool, lounge area). Self parking was included in our reservation which was nice as it’s normally $55/night. Overall it’s not worth the high price especially when the bed felt cheap and uncomfortable and there are other options available. Read less

She went over the top to accommodate our special requests, including connecting rooms. She was so calming on our multiple phone calls during such a stressful time. I just couldn’t get over how nice she was! Upon check in we worked with Marianne, she was so pleasant and explained everything we needed to know about the hotel and our stay. The service throughout the hotel was top notch, our rooms were beautiful, bed crisp and clean, pool was great, beach and boardwalk perfect for morning walks. We look forward to returning soon. When making my reservation, I was pretty confused at the all the different options but we landed on the Shore House which was a perfect fit for us as we have 2 small kids, and it was extremely family friendly. It had a more private, condo-feel. Some pros - full kitchen, with high chair + crib provided, washer/dryer and pull out in the living room. Amazing room and very accommodating to families + small kids. The pool also has a ramp entrance which was perfect for our 2 yr old. The Shore House has its own check in and it was a bit private from the hustle and bustle of the main area. We loved booking the fire pit/smore experience, amazing 24hr gym and we also had a great experience with sitter agency that the hotel recommended - SitterWise. Everything is in walking distance but you can also get food and deliveries via Instacart which they will hold in the lobby fridge for perishables. We went back and forth on renting a car but ended up saving a ton by ubering the entire time which helped save time & money on valets. The main entrance can get very crowded so we were glad we didnt have to worry about parking, etc. Overall it was awesome and we cant wait to come back! Read less

I stayed in The Views which were highly updated and upgraded from the main hotel. I loved the spa, and the ambiance of the hotel at night with all the available tours and activities. Food was decent. The beach was great the only thing I did not like was the fire burning at night the smoke blows right into the View rooms and even with the door shut it got smoky every night. Are the wood burning fires really needed or is there another cool option to replace that would not interfere with other guests? All in all I would recommend to everyone to stay here at least for one weekend in the summer it’s super cool! Read less
