Sands Suites Resort & Spa

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

Virgin rating

The hotel

Nestled on the beautiful beach of Flic en Flac and surrounded by landscaped tropical gardens, this relaxed resort has a welcoming Mauritian atmosphere. The outlook across the lagoon and the bay of Tamarin, with Le Morne Mountain in the distance, is impressive. Being on the west coast of Mauritius, you'll also be spoilt by amazing sunsets. The beach here is bounded by two reefs, an inner one that gives the hotel's swimming beach privacy and an outer reef where there’s a selection of complimentary water sports on offer. Enjoy the translucent, calm lagoon and keep a watch from the terrace for the dolphins that come into the bay. When it comes to dining, there's the main Tamarind Terrace restaurant, the intimate Pink Peppercorn on the beach terrace, and Spices, with its refined indoor dining room or more casual outdoor terrace. It's clear to see why this resort has a high volume of repeat guests.

My wife and I stayed at The Sands Hotel & Spa Resort from 11th to the 21st December 2025. I booked a Seaview facing room. This was a much needed break following health issues last year and chill out and luxury was called for. We were not disappointed. This was one of the smaller hotels in an avenue of much larger hotels, but this was to our advantage. The staff knew our names from the first day and the relaxed ambience was great which bigger hotels may loose. . The Hotel team knew my wife and I, had dietary requirements and each morning approached us at breakfast to check all was fine in the meal offering that evening, otherwise they would accommodate us. Towels were freely available on the beach and by the pool. No one stopped if you took a few? Never an issue getting a sun bed. If you got up from the sun bed a member of the pool or beach team would come over and tidy the towels, tuck them back in. Never had this before! . Staff would even wipe your sunglasses. Our room position was about 8- 10mtrs from the beach, it was paradise being in one at the end positions. The Room was very large, nice veranda, very big en suite with bath separate shower and walk in dresser area. With evening flights, having arrived early morning and leaving later on the last day a bathroom and changing room was made available. So you can relax in pool wear. The food standard was excellent, lots of show cooking and theme nights and as much choice as you need. Breakfast was super too. The A La carte was very good. The hotel is designed as open plan and open air, with thatching. This was very nice and quite cool as no air con being open like this, but the games room library gym and spa were closed spaces with air con. The spa was small but lovely with the best massage I have had on a holiday and very reasonably priced. I had a couple of mini massage freebies by the poolside too when the masseurs did a walk about. Evening entertainment was low key ,live music but not loud but the season was just starting so this may change a little later, but was chilled for us. There is nothing to do in Flic en Flac itself, it is quite a poor resort, a little run down in parts so you stay in the hotel for evenings unless you get a Taxi to the shopping mall or an outside restaurant. We were half board so didn't bother. This is the only minus point and that is not the hotel fault. But the position right on beach is fabulous. The beach here is great. You can walk out quite away. The hotel has glass bottom boat and a speed boat for activities , many free, also canoes and pedallows and wind surfing. My overall impression as number 1 are the staff, they make your stay relaxed and enjoyable, and the management here should be very pleased and proud that they have instilled a great culture maintained by all. The biggest nag for me is too many birds flying about in the mornings as this is open design, but this is Mauritius the island of birds. So just go along with it. Just make sure you close all the food displays! We booked through Dial A Flight and there tour /taxi partner on the island picks you up at the airport and takes you back in an air con car, and they have a rep who will come and sort out any trips you want to go on. All are personal guide tours no coaches! They made contact with us first day, so even if you are used to a TUI/Jet 2 style vacation you are still supported with this service. Recommend SW day tour/ Chamarel Park and spoilt for choice with ocean based excursions. Will definitely return and recommend highly. Read less

The hotel did several things which we really liked and showed real attention to detail: 1. We could check-in, in the room 2. They put our cases in a secure store, making more room in our beautifully appointed room and walk-in wardrobe 3. We were able to choose the time when we wanted our room serviced The food at the hotel was great. We have never been fans of a buffet, so we were delighted with the Dine Around menu in the other restaurants. But, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we did eat in the buffet and the quality and quantity of food was exceptional. My husband celebrated his birthday during our stay. The staff were incredibly attentive and made it very special. Ashbin organised a fabulous celebratory dinner, including a birthday cake. It was a really fabulous stay. Read less

I am sorry to say that I would not recommend this hotel because when things go wrong there is no care or consideration for the consequences. We stayed in June 24 and I contracted very severe food poisoning which resulted in me being admitted into hospital for 2 days. I was very poorly for almost a week and therefore much of our holiday was ruined. Sadly despite privately complaining the response has been that there is no apology as we were half board! We didn't eat anywhere else and the meal was cooked on the premises as a surprise for us. We certainly will not be going back and we will not be travelling with Tui again. Read less
