The Plymouth Miami Beach

South Beach, Miami

Virgin rating

The hotel

Take yourself just one or two blocks away from the hustle and bustle of South Beach, and you'll stumble across this hidden gem! You're still right in the heart of everything Miami has to offer - restaurants, bars and shops galore - but when you're chilling with a cocktail by the Art Deco style pool here, you'll feel completely chilled at the same time. If you're more of a beach person than the pool, hop aboard the The Plymobile and they'll take you straight to the beach hut where you can grab some towels and a lounge chair, and soak up the rays from the sand. It's not all rest though - try out a bit of kayaking or paddle boarding, or simply enjoy a good old game of connect 4 with your pals. You've surely heard of the famous Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill in New York - well now you can get your sashimi fix right here in Miami, and right here at this hotel! The high ceilings of the rooms give an airy, spacious feel. If you're travelling as a couple, we'd recommend the One Bedroom Terrace Suite so you enjoy a romantic soak in the bath tub, right in your own bedroom!

Walking in I would never see this being a 4٫5 star hotel. I’ve stayed in 3 star hotels that far surpassed the service/look of this one. The balcony room we paid extra for - it’s not a balcony like you would think in a traditional sense, it’s literally a lip where you can fit your feet (barely) - see photo. The room itself was hardly anything to be in awe of - old peeling furniture, filthy floors (had to clean my feet after just cleaning them from walking around in the room), lights that were burnt out, lotion/shampoo/conditioner that smelled awful - just very outdated. The bed was lovely, I will admit that. No personal access to ice, you have to call the front desk every time. The bar is stocked with outrageously priced drinks and snacks - walk the two minutes to CVS. The pool was beautiful but it closing at 5pm is beyond me…nighttime is beautiful, it should be open until at least 10pm. We booked through a third party so we’re unaware of the $150/night incidental hold - that was a surprise so be sure to expect that upon arrival. All in all I would not stay here again; there are far better choices in the area to choose from. Read less

Location was pretty good. Vibe was cool. Room was clean and neat, but bathroom door did not close easily and had to be "slammed" shut (which was loud). Greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine. Very nice. I booked a room for 4, but there were only 2 coffee pods (which really only yielded one cup of coffee). You had to purchase anything more than the two available. There were also only two glasses/cups for wine/coffee. Also, there was no complimentary coffee or water in the lobby. I was told they had a cafe, but it was in another building and it was $5 for a coffee. Also, although the staff was friendly and helpful, much of it was canned scripts (lip service?). When we checked in after 8pm, we were told we could request a late checkout (1pm instead of 11am) and a golf cart to take us to the beach for free. But we had to request it at 8am. This was part of the resort fee. So I set my alarm for 8am, went to the lobby in person to request both the late checkout and and the golf cart and was told they were fully booked and that we could NOT check out late and that the golf carts were out of service! Also, if the golf carts were available, they would not be able to take us to the beach club since it opens at 10am. But they said we had to check out at 11am. The pool was also not available to swim in at night since it is set up for poolside dinner. So what did I pay a resort fee for? I had no amenities! Now here's the kicker (BEWARE): The hotel arranged for a car to take me to the airport for $50. I sat in the lobby early and was told my car was "here." I was surprised since it was 15 minutes early. They put my luggage into the car and as the driver was driving, he kept yelling in Spanish on his cell phone about having a client (me). He hit traffic, made a U-turn, then started driving back. I asked if I was going to make my flight and if we were still going to the airport. He pulled in front of a convention center and told me to get out and into another car waiting. OMG! They said they got confused and that the other driver was going to take me to the airport. We made my flight, but when I was getting out he showed me his ticker and it said $95!! I said "No way! It is supposed to be $50." He said they had nothing to do with the hotel and that he was a cab. BEWARE! I refused to pay the $95. He called someone and said "OK." He charged my credit card $53. I think they scam passengers (tourist) into being scared and who end up paying out of fear of missing their flights. Crazy. I was really pissed at the hotel for allowing this to happen to me. I trusted their word. I almost ended up a victim of this scam. I had no amenities and paid $51 for a resort fee for one night. In sum: I was excited at check-in but reflected on my less than 24-hour experience and realized it was like a bait and switch (no late checkout, no golf cart, no pool at night, only servings for 2 when I booked a room for 4, and the car to airport fiasco). If none of this happened, I would have given the hotel a higher rating. Read less

I should have read other reviews about this hotel before booking through Virgin. I can’t make up my mind if they are just slap dash or actually carrying out fraudulent activity. I mistakenly asked for an upgrade as our originally booked room was too small for a week’s stay. The girl who we spoke to said she would call a manager and agreed for a weeks upgrade at £1100 dollars. Do not trust these people because they do not care about customers. I made the error to accept their word for it. When we left we were again told us the bill would follow. This was my second error. It took until the 1st of October for me to receive an Invoice. We stayed at the end of August. When it came it was totally wrong. I have tried to query the bill but I’m getting nowhere just denials. I already have a complaint logged with Virgin due to how we have been treated. There are some great establishments in Miami where service is great. I would advise do not book here unless you want to be overcharged. Just read all the other reviews. There is something not good about this place. Go elsewhere. Read less

Great hotel and location. Great food, clean and was top notch. The pool bartender Walter was best in class with amazing service. He made our stay very enjoyable and highly recommend. See you next year Walter! We will definitely be repeat patrons with how well we were treated.

My husband and I loved most aspects of our stay, which was a fairly last minute booking for just one night. There is a lovely historic vibe, the room was comfortable, clean and efficiently designed-- ok, small-- but that was clear when booking and fit us just fine. We slept great. It is a close walk to the beach, an off-site parking option, and the staff was friendly-- they appeared busy, perhaps slightly understaffed at the time. We had a small issue with an incorrect charge that should have been covered in the pre-paid service fee. That was eventually resolved. I would stay there again with these expectations. Read less
