The hotel

The largest in the Sandals chain, this adult resort offers two holidays for the price of one. Atop a fabulously verdant hillside you'll find the Butler Village, a collection of luxury villas with shared pools surrounded by bright flowers, and the Great House, which boasts a stunning main pool with intimate cabanas. Experience an evening of live music and old-fashioned cocktails at the first speakeasy bar in the Caribbean — but, do you know the password?! Jump aboard the "Hop" bus and head across the road to the Riviera Seaside and Ochi Beach Club, fronting a beautiful stretch of white sand with a boardwalk that extends out to sea. Enjoy a beachside cocktail, soak up some sun or sail the waves of the Caribbean sea on the infamous sunset catamaran cruise, alternatively, the resorts Playmakers will be sure to get the party started with various pool games! Perhaps pool volleyball is not on your agenda? — no problem! Scattered across the resort, you will find various quiet pools for a more relaxed vibe and don't forget, a sumptuous treatment at the Red Lane® Spa will help ease you into your tropical Caribbean getaway. The Amphitheatre is the entertainment hub of the resort, hosting live Reggae nights, Talent Shows and live dancers, the perfect way to experience and celebrate the Jamaican culture. Keep a look out for the daily 'Footprint', the resorts very own newspaper, highlighting the days events and activities.

My wife and I enjoyed another wonderful 11-day vacation at Sandals Ochi. This was our 8th trip to the resort, including the past three years in a row. We are senior citizens and prefer a quieter laid back style. We went the second week in January, so the timing and the resort reflects that preference. The weather was perfect, but for a few short sprinkles a couple of days. The resort is between 55% and 65% of occupancy that week, resulting in a far less crowded environment than at peak winter-spring periods, while visitors lean to the older side. Dinner reservations are easy to obtain, pool and beach chaise lounges are plentiful, rooms are cleaned promptly, and there is little to no wait to get a cocktail. We have been to other resorts, including Sandals, but also prefer this one because of the old Jamaican feel. The grounds are manicured, with ponds and flowering shrubs and trees augmenting the airy lawns. We stay in the west side of the Riviera building penthouse, above the beach and restaurant noise. The restaurant reservation desk is just outside the elevator, and I never saw anyone wait. There is a guest services office as well, should you need any other issues resolved. Six of the main dining venues are just steps from the building, three overlooking the Caribbean. Also, the main bar for dinner cocktails overlooks the Carribean as well, while there is a beach level bar two levels below. The building itself is old, but clean and well laid out. I appreciate the stone-walled hidden steps leading down to the beach on the west side of the building, reminiscing to the golden age of the mid-20th century. Rooms are an adequate size, with bathrooms sufficiently adorned. Wifi was excellent (we paid for the upgrade) and television was a generous size for watching NFL and European football. The best meals of the day are breakfast and lunch buffets, served outside on expansive Vista patio overlooking the sea. Breakfast has a large variety of fruits, pastries, waffles, breads, potatoes, and meats, including bacon, sausage, cold cuts and lox. I normally got a 3-egg omelet, made to order. The lunch is a daily rotating cuisine, with French and Jamaican being my favorite. Although it may seem to be too warm for soup, these were delicious...Red Pea on Jamaican, Cream of Carrot and Tomato on French, Minestrone on Italian, Corn Chowder on Mexican, etc., and should not be passed up. My wife is not an adventurous diner, so she often opted to have the delicious made-to-order wood fired pizza which is adjacent to the west side swim-up pool bar. I would describe the dinner meals as adequate. not great or bad. The appetizers were all good that we tried, and salads were fine. Of course, the steak options are of a lesser grade than we have in the states, but I found the strip steak at Vista and the Chateaubriand at Le Gourmand to be the best, if that is your yearning. The gnocchi at Valentinos (they will use a tomato sauce if asked and we prefer). The best entrees we had were the lamb shank at Le Gourmand, the salmon dishes at both Le Gourmand and Vista, the surf and turf at Vista, and various dishes at the two Asian restaurants. Our days were mostly spent relatively quietly reading overlooking the sea, which is close to the pool, swim-up or walk-up bar, and rest rooms. I played golf two mornings, managing a round in under three hours as a single and back to the resort for lunch and the afternoon....I would have played more but my game was not on. In summary, we love going to Jamaica, the friendly people, and the staff at Sandals Ochi in particular. The quality of service usually reflects on the management. I have had the pleasure to know Director Fitzroy, for many years, and met Director Michelangelo, this year. They do an excellent job in overseeing operations, hiring and training. Percival "leads from the front" with a great attitude and big smile upon greeting for breakfast or lunch. Of particular note, my wife brought an old computer to use on the trip and had difficulty logging on. Shantile and Barona at guest services and IT spent several hours and were able to get it up and running. Although the wait staff is generally good, Carrington at Le Gourmand is as professional as any waiter I have ever had anywhere in the world. Very polished! He could train others on the finer points of service. Michael and Krishane were the two the best bartenders we had. Finally, beginners Dinnesha and Michaal at Vista and Annita at the Ocean Beach Bar (whose contract was just ending) showed a high level of energy and are great additions. As we are well up in age, we thought this trip would have been our last. There are stairs to climb getting around. But alas, it will not. We booked another trip with Kenesha for next January!! As someone who isn't big on vacations, i would say this a solid vacation. The property is beautiful, and as a cat lover, the fact that they have all these little cats all over the place made me happy personally. I loved the the food very much. I went on some tours which were fun but i didn't really get to see more of the real Jamaica which i will try to do on my next visit. The room that i got was nicely kept and always clean and i always had something to drink, my only issue was the fact that i couldn't get through to room service. The best thing about this resort is that you can go to the other side which has the beach which is so beautiful. The scuba diving was also something i would liked very much. The bartenders Kirk-Patrick, Leon, Jerald and Kimari from the rabbit hole are such sweethearts always had something nice, funny or both to say. I enjoyed the sing along with the pianists. The entertainment by the amphitheatre was ok. I much prefer the more up close personal performances in the speak easy, i must shout the ladies Melissa, Toni-Ann and Lady Sashae they are all very beautiful and super talented. Daniel by the front desk is the best I've met on a vacation she pays attention to detail and is just so sweet. I have to mention Toni-Ann the singer again because of what she did for me and my friend, we met her in the ethel bar and she was so cute and sweet and she was telling us about then shows and what to expect but not only did she do that she had went and got us Jamaica themed shirts dresses cups hats and charms AND i birthday gift for my friend and when we tried to tip her out of appreciated she sweetly declined? That's not something one see's in persons her age and for that i hope she'll be there when we come back next year with more family members. There wasn't much that i can say i disliked only that sometimes the hop takes a little while. Read less

Condensed review: Our vacation was great. Sandals Ochi has wonderful people and a large property with many restaurants, pools and bars to explore. Jamaica is a beautiful country and I’m sure the many other Sandals resorts here have five star quality. However, as many other reviews have noted, Sandals Ocho is in need of a dire refresh. Overall this is a three star resort. Get a great deal, come here for sure. Paying full price? pass and stay at another Sandals. The longer review: The good: - Pool bars have fantastic staff. Games are energetic and bar tenders are fun. - Restaurants are plentiful and offer a great selection of food. - The landscaping is beautiful and the views are phenomenal. - Butlers were decent. Not the same level as Barbados or Antigua, but still good. Considering the resort was just over half full, I’m not sure it was a capacity thing. - The view from our room was amazing and a private pool was a nice perk. - The people. Hands down the people make this resort amazing. They’re caring, remember your name, and take time to make you feel valued. - The loyalty dinner. Sandals does a fantastic job in recognizing their return members. Dinner was great, photos were memorable, and the special gifts were unique. - Butler party. Fun games and prizes. Unique atmosphere, cocktails and food. - Go to Dunns river on the shuttle. The resort is amazing and totally different atmosphere. - The taste of Jamaica tour is fantastic. Great history, views, and food. - The drinks are strong and varied when available. - The not so great. - it’s a running theme. No matter where you go something is not there. Whether it’s a dish, an ingredient, a drink, rest assured, they don’t have it and can’t make it. This was especially true of kimonos. No saki, no red stripe, no Japanese beer. Kind of kills the mood. This is not the Sandals we have experienced in the past. Hopefully not in the future either. - The private pool chairs had mats full of cat poop and pee. Probably can’t help it but still not a perk of a butler level room. - The hotel tries to keep up image but the pools are missing tiles everywhere. No jets in any hot tub. Cracks and poor repair on every room that paint just won’t cover up. Bathrooms are hit and miss. - Availability of the selection of advertised food. Not a true issue as there is plenty of food, but if you’re sold on a certain dish, be prepared for it not to be available. Considerations - property is large. If you don’t want stairs and hills, stay seaside. There’s still stairs by the beach but hillside is a big walk. We enjoyed it for some exercise, butlers will pick you up, and transport is available until 2am. - Beach is smaller. Some great spots for a few people but smaller for Sandals - Many reviews talk about hot water not being available, but we never had an issue. Plumbing, as in many tropical locations is hit or miss. Things don’t drain and overflow. - There is an air of being bothered if there are requests. It’s probably cultural body language as people do accommodate the requests, but with some people it feels as if it’s inconvenient if you ask a question. - Again, this was a good vacation and this review is based on three other Sandals experiences to hopefully give some insight to the Ochi experience. To be fair, post covid hotels haven’t been great anywhere, but here’s to hoping that isn’t the norm for Sandals. We did rebook for St. Vincent while in property and have high hopes for next year. - The loyalty desk, red lane spa, and photo company really make sure you have had every chance to book with them. If the other sections practiced this level of commitment, I’m sure the not so great things above would be resolved. Shout outs to some amazing people. Nardia our butler. She was caring, accommodating and fantastic. She gave my wife a special birthday surprise and we truly appreciate her and her work. Allet (LE Gormand) offered additional experiences, super friendly and made our night. Kimani our driver from the airport. So personable and knowledgeable. Made our transfer from the airport amazing. Big Jo “Jovan” from the loyalty and travel desk. True professional and the reason why we booked St Vincent next year. Alsunee from red lane spa. Fantastic nail treatment and made the experience unforgettable. Andrew from Soy. After a slight wait list delay and the bar at kimonos being out of just about everything, he sat us and insisted we had a great time with his personality, accommodation, and caring attitude. Natalie from Valentino’s. So friendly and attentive. Fantastic food and atmosphere. She was very warm, kind, and gracious. Keisina the Manor restaurant hostess. She was so fantastic and took the time to speak to us and make us feel comfortable and welcome. She is an amazing asset! Jilllian from Dunn’s river’s Edessa. She was a great server and spent time speaking with us about the resort and the dinner. Read less
