We booked this hotel nearly 12 months in advance upgrading to an Ocean view room as we love to have an evening drink on the balcony enjoying the sounds of the waves. When we arrived we were taken to our room and our hearts sunk, we walked out on to the balcony and were greeted by not only the roof of the restaurant and bar area but to the direct right the massive air conditioning units which were unbearably noisy, you could not hear the beautiful waves at all. I was so upset I could have cried, this was not the paradise room I was expecting. I returned to reception straight away and told them how upset I was and they told me they may have a room available the next day, this ruined our first 24hrs and we were only on holiday for a week due to personal commitments (we were moved the next day down a couple of blocks - not perfect but much improved). After calming my husband down ( I chose the hotel) we went to the beach and hubby popped to the bar to get 2 rum punches, after 40mins he returned (I kid you not) the service is very very slow. His mood had not improved as you can imagine, we hardly used the bar after that as the service is so bad and didn’t even attempt to use the restaurant. Another thing to note is there isn’t sufficient shade on the beach and only a few palm trees which frustratingly and annoyingly guests like to reserve super early and not use till the afternoon. A few positives, the location of the hotel is amazing and the beach is just perfect, turtles bobbing their little heads up along the shore. The hotel is dated but we expected that. The staff are all lovely and friendly and St Lawrence gap is great with all the fantastic restaurants to choose from. Read less

Having visited this hotel over 10 times in the past 20 years. We have gotten to know the staff and have enjoyed great service and a certain level of patron behaviour. Unfortunately, they are starting to cut corners, with it taking almost an hour to get room service only to get lukewarm warm food and limp fries, tea delivered barely hot and stewed. There is not enough staff in the Bar area, and it takes far too long to be served. Guests in bikinis and swim shorts, what happened to no shirt no service? How about cutting off the drunks? I have never seen so many drunk Brits treating this great hotel like it is Ibiza. This may be due to the closure of the neighbouring hotel. But why has the hotel let its standards slip in what they allow in patron behaviour? It was very busy on the beach and not enough shade it's about time the hotel invested in some umbrellas that could be hired to the hotel. Guests. Rather than relying on the less-than-reliable beach vendors. I will end this review on a positive the wifi after years of unreliable and poor speed, was excellent. Read less

HOWEVER… the hotel doesn’t provide beach brollys (to the left and right of the hotel does) and every other beach i’ve been to provides brollys. we offered to pay.. but they don’t have any. this leaves people fighting for the tiny bit of shade the palm trees provide. it’s really poor and unhealthy the hotel needs to sort this ASAP. (if you can stick flag poles in the beach and give out a brolly for a rich couple you can provide them for everyone else) pool was lovely and refreshing. there was shade round the pool. staff on the whole were nice enough. the restaurant/bar was extortionately priced. it was less on the west coast. there is also no atmosphere at any time of day. the whole hotel is silent at all times, even in the restaurant of an evening making it very awkward. our room was a super saver room (no balcony) it was absolutely fine. needs a coat of paint but apart from that great. we had a tv with netflix, kettle cups and a fridge, nothing else. all in all a beautiful hotel and with some music/atmosphere/culture/ could be even better. however the reason i wouldn’t return is the guests. majority have been coming here for 20+ years and there fore think they have the right to whatever they want. the avg age is 60+ i am by no means “young” i dont drink and i dont party but the atmosphere in this hotel is like gods waiting room - hence the title of the review. i mean.. a couple of cds playing in the bar wouldn’t go a miss. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful, always willing to assist you. Our room was in one of the newer buildings and was light and airy, it had a sea view over a roof, however, there was a large air conditioning unit outside which was very noisy, which made sitting on the balcony uncomfortable, (room 209). The breakfast Buffett was great, delicious, fresh choices. The negatives, the slow service in the a la carte resturant and the bar, usually only one bar person making the drinks, it usually took half an hour to get 4 drinks, lunch normally took 2hrs - I just think they were disorganised!! The Buffett was rather repetitive, in the evening, although the new year Buffett was excellent. There was also a large group of Canadians/Americans who dominated the new year celebrations making us feel like we were imposing on a private party. I’m not sure if we’d return - the beach was stunning and being able to swim with the turtles was wonderful, however I think the hotel staff need further training and more bar staff. Read less

Southern Palms is an excellent Hotel with so many fabulous facilities and it is really great location. In fact it’s so good we will Definitely be returning next year. Whilst the rooms are not luxurious they are exactly what we expected on our first trip here, as per the brochure pictures, but are immaculately cleaned each day. I do have one gripe though and that is the service at the beach/pool bar restaurant. You can wait up to an hour for a drink and giving a food order. Not sure how long you have to wait for food as we gave up the 3 times we tried to eat there. Happy hour never seemed that happy as people waited so long to get served. If they got there act together that could keep more customers happy and make more profit. That said we made other arrangements and in the end it would not deter us from coming back but it improve the overall experience if they could sort this out and then I could give 5 stars. Read less
