The hotel

This lovely hotel sits on its own 100-acre peninsula at the southeast point of the island, just a 10-minute drive from Nelson's Dockyard with its historical buildings, museum and bars. There are two beaches, one for non-motorised water sports and the other for enjoying refreshing ocean breezes. The resort boasts five open-aired restaurants and one grill; most fêted of these is Piccolo Mondo, the resort's fine dining Mediterranean style restaurant in the village section, while the attractive waterside Docksider does a great Caribbean buffet each Thursday in alfresco surrounds. For a real treat, Royal Suites feature a king size bed with sunken living room, glass sliding doors to a private balcony and expansive bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and his and hers showers! A boardwalk also takes you from the suites right into the heart of Mamora Bay, perfect for strolling along in the moonlight! If plenty of home-from-home comforts appeal, choose a villa instead of a hotel room at St James's Club. Cheerful and bright, they feature warm Caribbean tones and terracotta tiles throughout. They're also very generous on space so are ideal for families and groups of friends.

Having read the December reviews, I was expecting the worse, but have just returned from a surprising good stay at St. James's Club. Obviously Christmas high season must have caused overcrowding issues. Few of these were in evidence during our mid January visit. Perhaps some pressure on the restaurants at peak times but generally there's enough choice and various outlets to satisfy demand. Maybe a more laid back attitude is more in step with the culture and mood of a holiday environment. Accommodation in the beach front units very good with excellent amenities, well prepared, clean, lots of space and a wonderful ocean view. We found staff very pleasant and eager to please. Live music can be somewhat loud during dinner. Other organised entertainment activity a bit basic, with a doubtful charge of $10 to play bingo on one evening! Wonderful setting, with two panoramic beaches. Great choice of accommodation types. Would have liked to have seem more evidence of senior management around the property, but all in all, with the exception of some tropical storms. for which I can't blame on anyone other than nature, a delightful and surprisingly good stay. Came home to discover an unexpected $154 charge on my credit card, no problem mistakes happen.. However two weeks and multiple emails later, no one has bothered to respond to my query. For that reason alone it’s a one star review. The setting itself was pretty enough, the room was tired though (think rusty chrome taps) and occasionally the service was ridiculously slow (we waited 1 hour 45 minutes for a burger at lunch). On the positive side they did a cracking job on NYE. Read less

The setting of StJames’s Club and Villa is beautiful. This resort might have been once upon a time a very decent resort but hasn’t age gracefully. It is our third visit in the island and stayed in other resorts and I would recommend the Elite Island Resorts to invest a little bit( a lot) more money on the SJC. The bedrooms really need updating, particularly the bathrooms and please train your staff how to clean thoroughly, they truly do not care. The food is beyond disappointment. I truly can not find the words. A school cafeteria would be definitely of higher standard. The service, 80% of the staff did not really wish to be there. The water of the pools raised serious questions about when and how often it was cleaned and the chemical level monitored. The overall hygiene of the premises needs to be addressed urgently. The Piccolino Mundo restaurant has been described on your site as ‘Fine Cuisine”well I am not a foodie or a snob but really!!! I better stop there because whatever I say will probably not make a difference because there will always be tourists, with lower standards expectations or inexperience of what a decent resort should be, that will be satisfied and I am sure that Elite Island Resorts do bet on it. Needless to say that we will not return to the SJC. … the sun at least did not disappoint just as we expected. Read less
